Things I Learned Watching a TruGreen® Pro Service My Lawn

Greetings, featherless friends! It’s your favorite pink icon, Felicity the Flamingo, and I keep an eye on your lawn. Recently, I’ve noticed my owner has called the experts at TruGreen to come over and care for my oasis. At first, I was flocked, but now it looks prettier and greener than ever! While you might think my life is all about standing in one place looking fabulous (and, let's face it, I do that very well), I've picked up some lawn care knowledge along the way. I want to help you create a lawn that's so lush and beautiful it'll be the envy of the neighborhood – and the perfect place for me and my flock to hang out. So, let's get started, shall we?

Flock Tip #1: Aerate for Extra Flair

While I'm a big fan of standing in one place, your lawn could use aeration to spread its roots and mingle. Lawn aeration involves making small holes in the soil to allow air, water, and nutrients to penetrate down to the grass’s roots; this helps the roots grow deeper and more substantial, creating a stronger, more resilient lawn.

I’ve witnessed TruGreen aerate my property with his small hole-making machine a time or two, and I’m confident it helps keep it looking healthy and vibrant. He even explained that nutrients, oxygen and water may have a difficult time getting to where the grass eats and drinks...the roots.

Plus, aeration helps to alleviate compaction too! You see, as much as we love to strut our stuff and show off our vibrant feathers, all that prancing around can really take a toll on the grass. But with proper aeration, TruGreen specialists can mediate the damage and keep your lawn looking lush and healthy.

Trust me; you'll be the talk of the town with this simple technique – even the gnomes next door will be jealous.

Flock Tip #2: The Grass-Cutting Machine Makes a Huge Difference

To maintain a well-manicured lawn, you must master the art of “mowing”. I may not have opposable thumbs or a fancy lawnmower, but the TruGreen specialist has taught me a thing or two about maintaining that perfect height. He says to never cut more than a third of your grass height at once to ensure it stays healthy and thick. Don't forget to keep your mower blade sharp for a clean cut!

Flock Tip #3: Feeding the Grass is a Good Thing

Once, I overheard the TruGreen person saying that my grass was hungry for nutrients, which is weird because it never told me. But you know what they say: "You are what you eat." Your lawn is no different. TruGreen can help treat the turf to a nutritious spring feast by providing a tailored fertilizer treatment to give your lawn the nutrients it needs to grow lush and fabulous, just like me!

Since every lawn is different, I’m glad my lawn gets special attention. The home dweller loves that TruGreen offers  “Custom Tailored Solutions,” which means finding the right food for my lawn, feeding the turf, and telling the home dweller how often he’d take care of those things so the homeowner doesn’t have to. It seems like he does a lot of work to keep my lawn looking good!

Flock Tip #4: Lawns Get Thirsty Too

If I thought all the talk about my hungry lawn was strange, imagine my surprise when I heard the TruGreen person mention the grass needing water. You need to quench your lawn's thirst with a refreshing drink of water early in the morning to get it through the stresses of the day. Watering deeply and infrequently rather than shallowly and often encourages profound root growth, which helps create a healthy and more resilient lawn.

He says to aim for about one inch of water per week during the spring and fall, applied in the early morning to minimize evaporation. He reminded us that during the summer your lawn may need a bit extra due to the higher temperatures. But remember, your lawn is fabulous – not needy. Overwatering can cause shallow roots and other problems, so don't drown it in affection!

Flock Tip #5: Watch Out for Pesky Pests and Weedy Weeds

The TruGreen specialist instructed the home dweller to watch out for lawn-damaging insects. He heard they could cause harm to my thriving oasis. He also mentioned their fearsome companion, weeds, which can overtake my lawn.

Weeds like crabgrass and dandelions and pests like chinch bugs or grubs could be a real downer for lawns and would turn my lovely green home into something less green. He mentioned that TruGreen could help with these things and that using all the other tips he’s given the home dweller to maintain a healthy lawn can help avoid them altogether. That made me breathe a big sigh of relief.
