Does your lawn have small, bleached, light pink or red patches? If so, your lawn may have red thread lawn disease. Don't panic. These things happen. I'm here to talk you through it... and don't feel bad. Grass diseases can happen in any lawn. Red thread lawn disease (aka Pink Patch) is a grass fungus disease that is more severe in the cooler, more humid areas of the Pacific Northwest on damp, slow-growing, nitrogen-deficient turfgrass.

Red Thread Lawn Disease Signs & Symptoms

Small, water-soaked spots cover a large portion of the grass leaf, and as they enlarge, the tissue dries out and fades to a tan color. The leaf may also be covered with pink fungal growth that extends from the ends of the leaf blade and onto the surface of the leaves. If you search online for red thread lawn disease pictures, you’ll see that these spots can range from 2 inches to 3 feet in diameter and have an uneven, ragged appearance.

Red Thread Lawn Disease Control

One of the biggest contributing factors in the appearance and spread of red thread lawn disease is low soil fertility. Not coincidentally, the best way to treat this particular grass fungus is with a balanced lawn fertilization program and specific watering habits, even though some fungicides do suppress these types of grass diseases. However, in most cases, there’s no real need to use a fungicide—but that’s a decision for an expert to make, depending on the severity of the disease or as a preventative measure.
