Types of Fertilizers:
- Complete Fertilizers are your all-in-one solution, containing the three key nutrients your lawn needs — nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) — plus other essential micronutrients. These fertilizers are great for providing balanced nutrition to help your lawn grow strong.
- Balanced Fertilizers offer equal amounts of those three key nutrients (like 10-10-10 or 15-15-15), but they may not always be the best choice. Your lawn might need a more tailored mix depending on the type of grass you have. A soil test can help determine the best ratio and common mixes might include 4-1-2, 5-1-3 or 5-0-3, especially in areas where phosphorus use is restricted.
- Weed and Feed fertilizers combine nutrients with a weed killer to target common weeds like dandelions. However, they only work if the weeds are actively growing, so timing is important.
- Pre-Emergent Fertilizers are ideal for preventing weeds before they even start. These fertilizers contain the same key nutrients, but also include weed preventers that stop seeds like crabgrass from germinating. Just note, they won’t help with weeds that are already growing.
