We all know the sworn enemy of summer: biting mosquitoes. But do you know how to properly banish these bloodsuckers from your yard?
The first thing to know is what attracts the biting pests. The human skin produces more than 340 chemical odors, and some of those odors can attract mosquitoes. While you can't prevent what your skin produces, you can prevent some of the mosquito attractants, like standing water. Mosquitoes can lay eggs in standing water, so take the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendation and once a week, empty and scrub, turn over, cover, or throw out containers that hold water such as:
- pet water bowls
- flowerpot saucers
- discarded tires
- pool covers
- trash cans, and
- rain barrels
Another popular mosquito prevention tool is bug spray: 65 percent of Americans report using bug spray, but only 51 percent of those who use it believe it works in preventing mosquito bites. Eradicating mosquitoes completely from your yard can help you avoid the need for bug spray and prevent biting mosquitoes from ruining your summer fun. Sign up for TruGreen’s Mosquito Defense and you'll receive monthly applications that use specialized equipment to target mosquitoes where they live, like under the leaves of trees and shrubs.
