Seashore Paspalum

Paspalum vaginatum

Seashore Paspalum is aptly named due to its high tolerance for salt. This, along with its other desirable turf grass characteristics, makes it a favorite for areas where either the soil or irrigation water has a high salt content.

Identify

The legumes of Seashore Paspalum are 1 to 2 millimeters in length, and its stems are erect and smooth at the nodes. The sheaths are also smooth and overlapping. Seashore Paspalum grass blades range from 3 to 8 millimeters wide and can be flat or folded inward lengthwise. The texture of this turf grass is mostly smooth, with a sparse amount of long hairs located on the top surface close to the base. Seed heads, or racemes, of Seashore Paspalum are usually found in groups of two or three, and their spikelets are solitary, smooth and elliptic to ovate-lanceolate.

Care

Excessive nitrogen applications will cause scalping in Seashore Paspalum, sometimes making proper turf grass management programs more intensive.
