Why and How to Deliver Macronutrients to Your Lawn | TruGreen

What Are Micronutrients for Turf Grass?

Sometimes your lawn needs a little extra love and care to become its best—micronutrients can provide that “little” something. These eight elements are essential for turf grass growth but are only needed in very small quantities.

Still, they are vital to a healthy, inviting lawn. The easiest way to feed your turf grass micronutrients is to leave your grass clippings on your lawn so they can decompose back into the soil.

What Micronutrients Does Turf Grass Need?

The eight essential turf grass micronutrients are:

  • Iron (Fe)
  • Manganese (Mn)
  • Zinc (Zn)
  • Copper (Cu)
  • Chlorine (Cl)
  • Molybdenum (Mo)
  • Boron (B)
  • Nickel (Ni)

Turf Grass Nutrient Deficiency

Soils with a high pH experience micronutrient deficiencies more often. Iron is typically the first and most deficient element. Along the Southern and Western coastal areas of the United States, iron and manganese are frequently deficient. Sometimes, even if iron is present in the soil, it may not be available for turf grass to use.

Improving Lawn Color with Micronutrients

Iron—along with the macronutrient nitrogen—is typically used to enhance the greenness of turf grass. Applying to your lawn’s leaves (i.e., foliar application) produces a rapid color response, whereas granular applications will improve your lawn’s green hues over time. Unfortunately, if your soil already contains enough iron, additional granular applications will not have any effect on color
