Transplanting Plants - Lawn and Landscape Resource Guide - TruGreen

Transplanting Plants

Just like you, TruGreen cares about your lawn and its overall health. This includes helping you protect the investment in both your lawn and your landscape when transplanting plants. Once you have selected the trees, shrubs and plants that are best suited for your lawn, it's important to transplant them correctly. TruGreen recommends these tips when transplanting.

  • Plants should be handled carefully to avoid breaking or cracking the soil ball.
  • Do not handle or carry plants by the stems or trunks.
  • The hole should be dug to a depth that would allow the plant to be set at the same depth at which it originally grew in the nursery.
  • When planting bare-root plants, dig holes large enough to allow the roots to spread out.
  • The hole for container-grown and balled and burlapped plants should be approximately two feet wider than the soil ball or container.
