Thatch
What is thatch
- Thatch is the layer that forms between the soil surface and the green grass and includes living grass as well as accumulated dead grass stems and roots.
- A thin layer of thatch (½ inch or less) helps insulate your grass against extreme heat or cold.
- Keeping thatch in check will help absorb water, reduce erosion, and retain chemicals that can then biodegrade in the thatch and soil.
When to act
- Core aerating your lawn before thatch builds up is the best way to prevent the problem.
- Once you have thatch accumulation, dethatch your lawn in the early spring or in the fall before the growing season ends.
- Bermudagrass and St. Augustine grass should be dethatched during the summer.
How to get rid of thatch
- Verticutters or dethatching machines are required to remove thatch when it has accumulated more than ½ inch in depth.
Aeration
What is aeration
- Aeration is the extraction of small cores of the soil to allow nutrients, water, and air to enter the root zone. The result is a lawn that responds to your regular lawn care program, with healthier growth below and above ground.
Why aerate
- To increase air circulation that has been blocked because of compacted soil or thatch build-up.
How to aerate
- A special machine is used to remove cores to a depth of 2-3 inches.
When to aerate
- As a general rule, it's a good idea to have your lawn aerated annually. Our Lawn Care Specialists can recommend the optimum time for aerating lawns in your area.
