Selecting Plants - Lawn and Landscape Resource Guide - TruGreen

Selecting Plants

A way to showcase your lush green lawn is by adding ornamental plants to your landscape. Selecting the right trees, plants, and shrubs for your climate, soil, and individual lawn are an important part of ensuring that they grow and develop into a beautiful part of your landscape. TruGreen recommends these tips in plant selection.

  • Typically, fall and spring are the best times to plant, but vary by area and plant.
  • Container-grown and some balled and burlapped plants can be planted almost anytime during the growing season, provided proper watering practices are followed.
  • Some ornamental plants need to be planted in the spring to allow the most time for new root establishment before low temperatures in the fall.
  • Avoid pest-prone plants. Certain plants are so prone to damage that control is virtually impossible.
  • Understand your tree's growth rate and overall size to make sure you've picked the right sized tree for a particular spot.
  • Plant only those plants recommended for your area that are known to survive the winter conditions.
  • Determine climate tolerance using a zone map like the one shown below.
